Before Kijo became Khon Kijo of the Cha'ouw Empire he was an Imperial Klingon Forcaster and served as the Klingon Empires Chief Xeno-biologist and weapons development group. His position was highly classified due to the nature of the work involved.
His work was related to the modification of DNA in environments that would lead to the increase in abilities that could be used to improve warrior effectiveness in extreme combat situations, otherwise known as combat gene theory.

Large amounts of military and scientific equipment was covertly sent to the planet Cha'ouw including but not limited to Klingon and Romulan star ships, advanced cloaking technology and various combat armored suits and combat weapons.
It was during this time that several conflicts broke out between the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire and the United Federation of Planets.
As a result many of the technicians and scientist were moved off planet Chal and relocated to various other stations. In a covert move, the Klingon Empire assigned a small team of personnel lead by a Klingon Commander listed only as "Kijo" to return to Cha'ouw and continue the experiments.
This team would take several classified volunteers and subjects from many worlds. These "volunteers" would later become the race known as Chalchaj 'qmey. A term which would later be used for anyone who was a member of the Cha'ouw Empire.
The experiments produced a wide variety in gene results that would be considered as advanced as it was dangerous to deploy.
The team soon came to realize that while the experiments were successful, the mis-management of the application could ultimately prove dangerous to the Klingon Empire. All records were deleted and all files related to the project were thought to be expunged. The Klingon Empire would later send a team of assassins to eliminate the remaining project team.
Only one member of the team survived this expulsion process, a Klingon agent known only as "Kijo".
